If you love craft beer and have a smartphone there are a few apps you should be using. If you love craft beer and don’t have a smartphone, you should get one just so you can use these apps.
Tap Hunter was founded right here in San Diego and I use it often. Using either their app for Android or iPhone, or their website you can find out what is on tap at local bars and breweries. Deciding what bar to go to? Use Tap Hunter to find out what is on tap. Have a craving for a specific beer? Search for a beer on Tap Hunter and find out what bars currently have it on tap. The nice thing about Tap Hunter is that the tap lists are maintained by the bars themselves and users can also send a notification that they have run out of something. This way the info on Tap Hunter is as up to date a possible. A must have for the true craft beer lover.
While not technically an app, Untappd is a mobile website that can be used on any Android, iPhone, Blackberry or Palm smartphone. Though it is a mobile website it made the list because I use it every day (yes I drink beer every day, no I don’t have a problem) and it acts like an app. Just visit the Untappd mobile site at http://m.untappd.com and sign up. The basic concept of Untappd is to check-in to what beers you drink and where you drink them. As you check-in to beers and venues you can send your check-ins to Facebook, Twitter, or Foursquare and earn badges along the way. To make drinking social, you can also see what and where your friends are drinking beer.
